Buttermilk

Buttermilk is a tangy, acidic dairy product that is traditionally made by fermenting milk with lactic acid bacteria. It has a thick, creamy texture and a slightly sour taste.

Buttermilk is commonly used in baking, particularly in Southern cuisine, to help activate baking soda and create a light, fluffy texture in baked goods like biscuits, pancakes, and cakes. It can also be used as a marinade for meat or poultry, as a base for creamy dressings or dips, or as a refreshing drink on its own or flavored with fruit or spices.

While buttermilk is lower in fat and calories than whole milk, it is still a good source of calcium, protein, and other essential nutrients found in dairy products. It may also contain probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that can aid in digestion and support a healthy immune system.
